Barcelona was established by Phoenician and Carthaginian settlers about 2500 years ago and was taken over by the Romans in 1st century and was later taken over by moors by the 8th century. Placa Sant Jaume was used as the administrative building right from the Roman Empire and us still being used as the city hall where Sardana an ancient Greek dance is still held on Sundays. 11th to 15th century was the golden era in the history of Barcelona where not only the trade of the city grew many folds but also Cathedral of Barcelona was built. Many famous tourist destination and heritage sites were built during this period like Placa del Rei, Sant Pau del Camp, Santa Maria del Mar etc.
In modern times Barcelona saw a wave of industrialization in 18th century which was halted in 19th century due to Napolean wars and an epidemic of yellow fever but the city stood with strength and constructed first ever railways track of spain and grew leaps and bounds in 1950’s to 80’s becoming one of the hottest tourist destinations in Europe.
