Around 15 miles to the south of Akumal is Tulum which was earlier called Zama. Zama means the place of the dawning. The place is perfect for a short trip as the location is picturesque as it faces the shoreline of Caribbean and it sits on a cliff. Tulum has beautiful ocean views and many Mayan ruins.

The remains suggest that in the ancient times the city was home to many elites and this is indicated by the remains of an ancient country club. To prevent the town from land and sea invaders there is a 20 feet wall around Tulum. For all those people who appreciate ancient craftsmanship and architecture must visit Tulum and this is the reason that the city has become a popular destination for tourists. All the structures in the city have intricate and beautiful carvings. The most popular ruins here are those of Castillo Pyramid, Temple of the Frescoes and the Temple of the Diving God.
